The free network

We build a structure of connections and contents shared between computers and active people, who are interconnected through the waves of the xsf-coop. The network tries to be an intercommunication tool for groups and individuals socially active.

It is not necessary to enter Internet, access is free and out of charge. To accede you simply have to connect to one of the redistributors nodes xsf-coop.net that constitute the network. Search your nearest nodes in section deployment. We are just beginning, but the first contents are already available, as you can check in the list.

Explanation

The wireless technology, together with the legislation that confers a group of frequencies the qualification of non licensed citizenship use, allow us to aspire to run a series of ideals that we would have desired for the Internet we know until today, but that we can carry on through this parallel network. We begin clarifying some concepts necessary to understand the usage we want to give to the network.

Parallel internet, Free Internet. There are two different networks. One consists int the connection to Internet the way we already know it. The innovation consists in the free network being built at the same time the Internet connection extends. While the publicly known Internet, is submitted to the channel control by Telefónica, to the economic exploitation of telecommunication operators, and to the pressure of private companies that want to convert it into an extension of their market, in the parallel network, the channel would be created and maintained by ourselves, access would be free simply from responsible usage criteria.

Non licensed waves. Unlike the frequencies used conventionally for radio and TV, wireless communities use frequency bands (2.4 Ghz and 5 Ghz) that do not need an administrative bestowal to be used, because of that we call them non licensed waves. Until now there have been some positioning of the CMT (Telecommunications Market Commission) who has been permissive with the citizen usage that’s being made. So we find ourselves with the opportunity to occupy the frequency for social use, before someone else wants to give it other uses.

High speed interactivity. When interactivity of digital television only exists in the words of politicians, we have the possibility to provide ourselves with a technology that will allow the decentralized contribution of all kinds, included audiovisuals little viable through conventional Internet. But not only audiovisual content, from electronic mail, to videoconference, a new dimension of intercommunication possibilities will open if we can build an consistent network.

Copyleft experimentation space. By the time entities in defense of intellectual property rights continue to charge, and in this situation the creation and extension in usage of licenses of shared knowledge like “Creative Commons” is not only convenient but necessary. The open network can be an space of experimentation where contents are created collectively and where thus can be basically copyleft.

Free networks. While the demand of free Internet for everybody is still in the domain of utopia, because of the interests that telecommunications operators have created, the advance of new technologies allows with a minimum cost of setting up, to create parallel networks, which, after an initial inversion on material, will be able to function freely since their maintenance cost, not very high, is financed by the cooperative consume of Internet.

In this project we intend to take advantage of the wireless network technologies and the existence of non licensed waves, to connect groups and individuals from the social movements. Interactive TV and radio, files sharing at high speed, videoconference, free phone calls… are some of the things we can manage to do through the free access network, if we achieve a wide enough participation.
